Let's Get it Started! This web page includes links to the online assignments for your child that we will be using this year. Most have used these sites in class so they are very familiar with them. This abrupt transition from classroom learning to Distance learning may be challenging to navigate, but presents us an invaluable opportunity to move towards implementing more 21st century approaches to curriculum and learning. This online education and instruction is a great resource to support increases in learning, communication and collaboration skills required in today's classroom, equipping your student to success in their future academic endeavors.
If you Click on the Current Assignments (link in the header), You will see sample assigned lessons. You and your child can use the links at the bottom of the Current Assignments page to see what they will be doing. If they can sign in to the resource, they can start practicing and start learning! It’s that easy. Please note: All students have a Cherryland Elementary School email account that is hosted by Google (Gmail), but keep in mind these accounts are not confidential and should not be considered private to the student. Therefore, it is recommended that you know your student’s username and password in which I will provide. Email me at [email protected] and I will respond back with your student’s username and password information. Partnering With You, Mr. Dorsey |
Hello Cherryland Families,
I am very excited to officially start the school year with distance learning tomorrow, August 24th. I have a few updates to share from the work we have been doing over the past few days. Last year we were able to successfully distribute over 500 Chromebooks to cherryland students in order to assist in distance
learning. Many of you kept those chromebooks over the summer to continue academics while we were away. We also allowed our graduating 6th graders to take the chromebooks they had checked out up to middle school with them ensuring a smooth start to 7th grade. That left us with only a handful of
chromebooks to give out to our new Kindergarten students this year. Thankfully HUSD had the foresight to order new chromebooks for all of the schools back in April. A limited number of chromebooks arrived at Cherryland on Friday. That is correct, they were back ordered for 4 months. These chromebooks arrived fully formatted, tagged, and ready to log in immediately. We were able to distribute over 80 chromebooks to excited kindergartners on Friday afternoon. We were also able to troubleshoot any login issues right on sight making sure when families got home and connected the chromebooks to wifi they would immediately be able to access the application https://clever.com/ with their student GAFE (gmail) log in and their student ID/Password. We are now working on getting chromebooks out to other students who were not able to or did not require chromebooks last year.
Below I have outlined critical information for tomorrow and next week.
Chromebook Distribution:
We plan to hold distribution times tomorrow and later this week for other grade levels. Be on the lookout for a message from Mr. Dardon with your specific window for pick up tomorrow. We expect weather and smoke conditions to be rough tomorrow so please consider delaying your pick up to later this week when the lines are not so long. Listed below are some important steps to take prior to coming:
● Please if possible come with one parent and no children as the line will be long and it will be outside so having students or children will increase the potential exposure to smoke and COVID19.
● If you were able to check out a chromebook last year you will not be checked out a new chromebook unless you return the chromebook from last year and it is no longer functioning. Our supplies are limited and we will take the time to verify whether one was checked out last year.
● Please bring a photo ID to verify you are the legal guardian of the student you are signing out the chromebook for. If you plan to send an older sibling or relative please provide written permission for them to sign out the chromebook. We will keep that written permission with the contract for the chromebook.
● Please bring your student ID #. This is the same as the lunch number and password for the chromebook and is available in the parent portal and from the classroom teacher.
● Please wear a mask and if possible bring your own pen or pencil to fill out the paperwork required for checking out a chromebook.
● Chromebooks will be checked out directly to students through a library system. So there will be a record of the exact chromebook checked out to students. They will be responsible for returning these at some point. Any damage, lost power cords, or stolen chromebooks could cause you to incur charges to your students library accounts.
● Please check your individual grade level times for pick up in a separate email/text today. Do not come early or during other check out times. This is intended to keep lines short and moving quickly. If you are unable to come during your check out time consider coming after 5 pm tomorrow or at another scheduled pick up time this week. More info on additional pick up times will be provided later this week.
● We are not doing car pick up like we did last year for several reasons. First is that we are taking the time to log your student directly into the chromebook so that it will be a much easier process when you get home to connect to wifi and start working. For this reason please park your car in
the parking lots and walk to the front of the school to get in line. Please maintain 6 feet of distance and social distancing protocols.
First Day/Week of school updates:
● Lunch and breakfast will be served through drive up service all week at 11:00 am at all hayward schools. You will be required to have your student(s) ID numbers to pick up food so please have it written clearly on your phone or paper to show to food service providers. You will receive a lunch/breakfast pack for every student ID number you provide. Drive up service is preferred for safety reasons but walk up service will be provided as well. Students do not need to be present to pick up food. You can go to any HUSD school to pick up food.
● If you have not done so please apply for free or reduced lunch at this website: http://www.freelunchhayward.com/
● Synchronous classes: Your teacher should have reached out to you on Friday or this weekend with instructions for participating in class tomorrow and this week. If you have not heard from your teacher or do not know your student’s classroom assignment please try to access this information through the Parent Portal or if you cannot access that, email me directly at [email protected] This week will have short synchronous all class sessions as well as individual meeting times and some asynchronous work for students.
● Immunization Records: If you received a letter about past due immunizations OR if you are unsure if we have all of your current immunization records for your student, there is a feature on the parent portal to UPLOAD those documents. You may install a free APP on your phone (such as Adobe scan) to properly scan all documents. Immunization requirements for school have NOT been waived by the public health department. Please also update all current medications, medical conditions, and allergies on the parent portal as it will replace the paper emergency cards.
● Cherryland SBDM team will be meeting this week to review the guidelines form the state and District office to provide further updates and guidance about schedules and future materials pickups.
● Make sure you are able to login to the HUSD parent portal. If you visit the webpage Parent Portal there are step by step directions on how to do this. Once you are able to successfully log into the portal you will be able to complete our registration/annual update online. If you need assistance in this process you can email directly to [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]. We will also have some in person support times this week at Cherryland.
Other Technology Update:
● Wifi Hotspots: Last year we were able to secure 30 wifi hotspots and checked them out to our families most in need. This year we are still waiting for additional hotspots but have received requests for over 100 already. It will take us some time to secure these resources so please consider alternative means of accessing the internet until we are able to get more hot spots.
● Keyboards, Mice, and Headsets. We received a high number of requests through our technology request form for additional technology and we are working on putting together an accurate order of these supplies. Some teachers were able to secure donations of technology to provide for individual classes. We expect to have additional technology available later in September. We will notify you as soon as it comes in.
● If you have not done so yet you can submit a request for technology with this request form. Tech Request Please only complete one form per student as this form is intended to give us accurate ordering numbers in doing an audit this week I discovered many families had completed this form multiple times and some as many as 5 times. This does create more work in trying to create accurate supply orders.
As always you can communicate directly with me at [email protected]
I hope this letter finds you well and excited to start another new and different school year.

diferente.
